How do you make a great vegan burger?

27 Mar

A friend sent me the link for Serious Eats’ Food Lab post about creating a vegan burger that doesn’t suck. Such a thing does exist — I’ve had them — but it’s interesting to see how they approach it. Continue reading

Vegan Recipes for an Awesome Super Bowl Party

2 Feb

Image

So apparently there’s some football game this weekend — the Puppy Bowl! And kittens are better than any Madonna halftime show.

I’m kidding, I know it’s the Super Bowl. I even know which teams are playing, and am contractually obligated — by my marriage contract — to root against the Patriots. Knowing about the game doesn’t mean I care about the game, however.

I really don’t. Continue reading

The muscles from Brussels…sprouts: Vegan bodybuilding hits NYT

11 Jan

The New York Times has really been jumping on the plant-food train lately — its latest entry is an article about vegan bodybuilders that ran on January 4 and discussed the growing body (hee) of evidence that a diet of veggies, fruits, seeds, and legumes can indeed help someone grow to be big and strong. Vegan diets examined by U.S. News

5 Jan

Veganism really hit the mainstream in a big way in 2011. It’s still very much a diet of the minority — various surveys indicate that only 1% of American adults are vegan — but I think that several things happened last year to make vegan diets seem less extreme and more doable for the average person.

Apparently I’m not alone in thinking that, as this U.S. News article from last week indicates: Continue reading

101 in 1001: Learn 500 new words

4 Jan

After a couple of lackluster years, I decided to kick off my 30s (gah) with a list of 101 things I want to do in 1001 days. Some of them are purely fun, some are pretty ambitious, and some are doable but incremental. I’m not really up for posting the entire list at once, at least not yet, but I’ll be blogging about it here along the way.

One of my goals is to learn 500 new words. I am terrible at Scrabble but I do like to think that I have a pretty good vocabulary; that said, there are always more words to discover! (I really like words.) Here are the ones I’ve learned so far. Continue reading

Veganism hits the Canadian mainstream

16 Dec

I think these two things are a pretty good indication of how much more mainstream and “normal” veganism has become over the past year or so. Continue reading

The VeganSaurus gift guide for omnivores

3 Dec

So, we all know — and like, even! — some omnivores. And generally the goal of buying someone a gift is to get them something you think they’ll enjoy. At the same time, I don’t want to buy someone, I don’t know, a long leather trench coat for Christmas because that would make me feel kind of gross. (They probably wouldn’t appreciate the above shirt, either.)

That’s why I love the new VeganSaurus gift guide for vegans to omnivores. Continue reading

What a turkey should be, and what we’ve turned it into

2 Dec

Last night I attended the November edition of Veggie Drinks in Toronto (an event I organise monthly). At one point, the discussion turned to protein intake — many people, omnivores included, think they don’t eat enough protein when in reality the average North American is eating more than the recommended intake. Part of the reason for this, I think, is that we’ve become completely out of touch with what a serving of meat really is — the fact that we tend to eat animals by the part isn’t helping.
